Adhik Maas
The Sacred Extra Month in Hindu Calendar
What is Adhik Maas?
Adhik Maas, also known as Purushottam Maas, is an extra month in the Hindu lunar calendar that occurs about once every 32.5 months. It is added to align the lunar months with the solar year, as the lunar year is approximately 11 days shorter than the solar year.
Adhik Maas is considered highly auspicious for spiritual practices such as Japa, fasting, donations, and religious observances. However, it is not considered suitable for weddings and other "manglik" (auspicious) ceremonies.
Key Characteristics:
- Occurs once every ~2.5 to 3 years
- Also called Purushottam Maas or Mal Maas
- Dedicated to Lord Vishnu
- No fixed month — depends on lunar calculations
- Highly auspicious for spiritual practices
- Not suitable for auspicious ceremonies
There is no Adhik Maas in the selected year.
