Nakshatra Details

Swati means auspicious. This constellation of only one star is deep orange in colour, but is at the sixth place among the brightest stars in the sky in brightness. Being very close to the Pole Star towards the north, its western name is Arcturus and Indian name is Nishtaya (thrown) and scientific name is Alpha Bootis. It is 25 times larger than the Sun in diameter, slightly less in temperature and is 36 light years away.

Arjun

Consuming the bark of this tree makes the heart very strong, that is why this tree was named Arjun after the brave Arjun. Due to the redness of the trunk, its other name is Kakubh. The scientific name of this tree is Terminalia Arjuna. This tree grows more in submerged areas or those areas where the ground water level is high. It is a tree of huge size and hanging branches which remains green all the time.

Mythological Significance

According to a story in Kathak Samhita, when Indra killed Vritra, the red Arjuna tree was born from his blood. All the similes of Arjuna are used for this tree. It is possible that in mythological belief, this tree was connected to Arjuna in some other way as well. According to Vrikshayurveda, planting Arjuna near the house is not right. According to mythological story, Kubera's son Nala, due to the curse of Narada, became Neeramrut (Jarul and Kuber, the twin Arjuna trees, Yamalarjuna, for Swati Nakshatra in Kerala's Yogakshema Panchang, who got freedom from the tree-life by getting uprooted in Krishna's Ukhlal Bandhan Leela.
