Krittika means woven or net. Actually it is a white cluster of many stars, which looks like a net woven from stars. It is identified in the sky by its combined brightness. According to Taittiriya Brahman, Krittikas are seven sisters. Their names are Amba, Dula, Nittani, Abhrayanti, Meghayanti, Varshayanti and Chupunika. According to mythology, the six Krittikas raised Kartikeya by feeding him milk like a mother, that is why Kartikeya was called Shanmatur. Its western name is 'Pleiades', which means 'crowd'. According to a Greek legend, these were the daughters of Atlas, who held the world on his shoulders, whom Atlas, being pleased, placed in the sky.
