Nakshatra Details

Jyeshtha means the biggest. Three stars situated on the Scorpio spine in the Scorpio constellation form the Jyeshtha constellation. On the full moon night of the month of Jyeshtha, most of the moon is in this constellation, these days are the biggest and the hottest in the year. Probably that is why this constellation is named Jyeshtha. The central star of this constellation, Alpha Scorpio, is a red giant star, whose diameter is four hundred times more than the Sun and is 173 light-years away from us. Due to its appearance as big and red as Mars, it was called Antares (rival of Mars) in the western language.

Pine

Chir means torn. The bark of this tree is typically torn, hence it is called Chir or Chir. It is called Saral in Sanskrit because it grows in a straight length like a straight line. Its scientific name is Pinus roxburghii. In Sanskrit it has also been given names like Peetvriksha, Surbhidaruk, Dhoopvrikshak, Pratikash etc. Generally, its forests are found in the lower regions of the Himalayas.

Mythological Significance

Pine wood or its sawdust is used in havan. Resin has been related to Lakshmi ji by calling it Shrivas and Shriveshta in Sanskrit. Resin is beneficial in removing the obstacles caused by demons. Note: In Maharashtra region, the silk cotton tree is popular for Jyeshtha Nakshatra and in Yogakshem Panchangam of Malayalam, the word Vetti is used for the plant Aporosa Lindliana.
